Perfume Etiquette

Use with caution.

Scent stands out strongly to our senses and in our minds. The smell of one's perfume has the potential to entice or irritate. Know how and when to wear it.

Selection

Perfume is a bit like clothing. What goes well on one person may not suit another. Select a perfume with care. Allow your perfume to complement you, not to lend a false impression.

Where to Apply

Apply your perfume in private. It is inconsiderate to the noses--and allergies--of others to apply it in a public place. It also lends a bit of mystery to the matter.

How Much

Use restraint when applying perfume. The overwhelming odor of a strong perfume can distract others from their work, as well as cause headaches and nausea. Remember that while you may become numb to the scent of your own perfume after awhile, it can be blatantly apparent to others.

What Kind

As you would your clothing, your perfume should match the occasion. In general, heavy perfumes are best reserved for a night out. Choose a lighter scent for daytime wear.

When to Limit

Know when to limit or forgo your perfume usage. The smell of perfume is magnified in crowded or enclosed places, as well as under hot lights. Keep this in mind when travelling, going to the theater or acting in a play.
