What Makes My Eyelashes Sore & Fall Out?

Eyelashes are susceptible to many infections and diseases. Sometimes the loss and soreness of lashes is due to a biological factor, such as a stye. There are also compulsive conditions that cause a person to pull out his eyelashes, such as trichotillomania.

  1. Diseases

    • There are seven diseases which can cause eyelashes to fall out. The diseases are blepharitis, nonbullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans, leprosy, progeria, Siemens syndrome and spastic paraplegia with neuropathy and poikiloderma.

    Drugs

    • There are also drugs that can cause you to lose eyelashes. Drugs such as Acitretin, Soriatane and Neotigason cause damage and loss of eyelashes.

    Trichotillomania

    • Trichotillomania is a disease in which people compulsively pull out and pluck their own hair. With trichotillomania, a person may also pull his eyelashes out, leaving them swollen and sore. Sometimes bumps and infected areas occur where the eyelashes have been pulled out.

    Styes

    • A stye is an infection that occurs in the root of an eyelash (the follicle). It causes a red bump and extreme soreness.

    Conclusion

    • When diagnosed and treated correctly, most eyelash problems can be cured quite easily. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any symptoms such as eyelash loss or soreness.
