Submission Guidelines for Publishing Companies

So you have a new idea and can't wait to write that book. While specific submission guidelines vary by company, writers should follow some general rules. These include proper manuscript formatting and packaging.

  1. Manuscript Formatting

    • Save the book on a disk while you write it, to prevent you from retyping it if you have to correct errors. Use a 1 1/2 margin at the left and right side and one inch on the bottom. Put your name and address on the first page of the manuscript and the number of words on the right-hand side.

    Query Letter

    • Write a detailed but concise query letter to include with the manuscript. State the subject of your book or magazine article and detail how it fits that publication and target audience, some research on your topic and your credentials for writing on that topic.

    Manuscript Packaging

    • Mail your manuscript in a 9 x 12 envelope, if it is longer than five pages, or in a #10 business envelope if shorter. Always send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your manuscript, enabling the editor to write to you regarding the submission.

    E-Mail Submissions

    • Even though some Internet magazines may have less formal submission guidelines, you should still practice good writing etiquette. For example, in your query letters, address the editor by his last name and properly format your manuscript.

    Considerations

    • Be prepared for possible rejections by several editors, since every editor has different tastes. Even writers with great abilities receive rejections regularly. Remain positive and keep trying, to ensure you get noticed.
