Prognosis for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS causes either constipation or diarrhea. Other symptoms are generally caused by these conditions. Gas and bloating are common to all types of IBS.

  1. Symptoms

    • The constipation or diarrhea caused by IBS generally causes the other symptoms. Gas and bloating are common to all types of IBS. Nausea and cramping are also possible. Hemorrhoids may also develop, generally with constipation dominant IBS.

    Anxiety

    • Many individuals experience anxiety over worries about having an accident or not having access to a private bathroom. This creates issues when working or traveling. Anti-anxiety medicine and psychological counseling have been shown to be effective.

    Depression

    • Since IBS can make social outings and meals awkward and uncomfortable, many people with IBS may skip social events. Over time, depression may develop due to withdrawal from social situations and the difficulty of coping with IBS. Again, anti-depressants and psychological counseling have shown promising results.

    Outlook

    • Controlling the diet and stress allows many individuals with IBS to cope quite well. They usually don't experience symptoms as often or severe once these two factors are controlled.

    Prognosis

    • Although there is no cure for IBS, there are medications that treat the symptoms. Nutritionists, doctors and psychologists can help people with IBS develop a diet and strategy to deal with anxiety and depression.
