Prom Etiquette & Presenting a Corsage

Prom is a formal gathering. In addition to following the rules for behavior and dress code set by your school, there are several ways to make a good impression on your date and peers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Invitations

    • While it is traditional for a boy to ask a girl to prom, it is also acceptable for a girl to ask a boy to be her date. Invitations should be made in person and at least a month before the event. When you say "yes" to a prom invitation, you are committed.

    Attire

    • Ladies attending the prom should wear a cocktail-length dress. If your dress is strapless, wear a shawl or wrap. Gentlemen can rent a tuxedo or wear a dress suit with dress shoes. Dates should discuss their attire beforehand, so colors don't clash and the corsages and boutonnieres match.

    Corsages and Boutonnieres

    • Corsages and boutonnieres should be work on the left.

Corsages and boutonnieres should be presented before photographs are taken and the couple leaves for the dance. They should be worn on the left shoulder or lapel with the stem facing downward. If the lady is wearing a strapless or spaghetti-strap gown, the corsage should be pinned on the left side of the bodice. A wrist corsage should be worn on the left hand.

    Photographs

    • Photographs are typically taken before the dance and again at the prom by a professional photographer. The couple should decide in advance what photo package to purchase and how to pay, in order to avoid any awkwardness at the ordering table.

    Getting to the Prom

    • Be punctual. Never honk the horn or stay in your vehicle when picking someone up. Always walk to the door and introduce yourself if you don't know your date's family. If you are taking a limousine, it is customary to tip the driver.
