The best wading boots remain soft once dry

There are many factors to consider when buying wading boots. A good pair of wading boots can make your adventurous trips through rivers and over slippery rocks enjoyable. Good wading boots are an investment, but have a long life expectancy, provide good ankle support, help to balance your weight and are sturdy enough to keep you comfortable on long, hazardous trips. The best wading boots provide necessary traction on slippery surfaces, in flowing streams and on ice.

  1. Best Fabrics for Wading Boots

    • Wading boots get completely wet, so models made from leather that remains soft once dry, rubber or plastic are the materials of choice. Whatever material you decide on, the boots should feature a good combination of stiffness and softness to both protect and support your feet and provide uniform comfort.

    Best Soles for Wading Boots

    • Look for soles with good grip. Studded soles and soles with cleats are a good choice. Aim for soles made from sturdy plastic or rubber with rust-free, metal studs.

    Best Metals for Wading Boots

    • The metal on wading boots should be a rust-free or coated material. Other metals will rust and are bad news when combined with water, especially saltwater. Rusting metal can also ruin other components of your boots.

    Best Laces for Wading Boots

    • The laces on wading boots should be made from nylon or another material that won't disintegrate after exposure to water. Elasticized shoelaces are a good choice. Many brands of wading boots have elastic shoelaces that are fastened with a spring loaded closure. This allows easy tightening and loosening of shoelaces. Spring-loaded closures can be purchased separately and placed on your favorite pair of wading boots.

    Precautions

    • You should never buy cheap wading boots; buy brand name instead.

Remove any mud or debris from your wading boots after each use. Wash, dry and store your wading boots when not in use. Pour out all extra water before you leave them to dry.
