Acid reflux creates a painful, burning sensation in the chest. It can interfere with your daily life, affecting what, when and how you eat, and cause pain and stress. Apples can help cure this uncomfortable situation.

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux happens when the lower esophageal sphincter valve (LES) isn't functioning properly. When this valve doesn't open and close at the right time, stomach acid can creep up into the esophagus, causing a burning pain and irritation.

Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber that promotes digestive health, coats the esophagus and stomach, and has soothing properties that help cure acid reflux.

One of the best fruits for all around nutritional values, apples are high in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium and phosphorus. Apples contribute to overall health, including the digestive system.

When to eat an apple

Of course you can eat an apple any time, but eating an apple before a meal helps to properly start the digestive process. An apple right before bed can help alleviate the problem of waking in the night with acid reflux symptoms.

Apple derivatives

Apple cider vinegar is a well-known aid for acid reflux, possibly creating an acidic balance in the digestive system, contributing to proper function of the lower esophageal valve and helping digestion in the stomach. Apple juice also is beneficial. Drinking apple juice after meals, especially fatty meals, will calm the system and aid digestion.
