According to "What to Expect When You're Expecting," eczema is a common condition of pregnancy. Pregnant women must be careful with treatment as traditional treatment methods may not be safe during pregnancy.

  1. Symptoms

    • Eczema usually manifests as a red rash on the skin that creates intense itching. The skin may also have a scaly appearance.

    Causes

    • Most people who suffer from eczema also have other allergies to food or other irritants. Eczema can also be triggered by contact with certain substances and environmental changes, such as humidity and temperature.

    Medical Treatment

    • Steroid creams are a common treatment for people who are not pregnant. However, during pregnancy, these creams may not be safe for use. Any treatment of eczema should be closely monitored by a physician.

    Home Treatment

    • Keeping skin moisturized throughout pregnancy can help prevent eczema. Scratching should be avoided as it can make eczema worse. Use cold compresses to alleviate itching. Wearing natural fibers may also help.

    Considerations

    • Hormone changes in pregnancy can create a reaction to a substance that, in the past, has not caused any problems. If eczema occurs, initial treatment should include eliminating any substance that comes in contact with the skin that contains a fragrance, such as lotion and laundry detergent.
