Canine ear rashes that are itchy and crusty must be treated as soon as possible by a veterinarian. These rashes have several causes.

  1. Ear Mites

    • According to PetHealth101.com, dogs with ear mites develop intense itching accompanied by a crusty discharge.

    Allergies

    • Almost 80 percent of ear issues in dogs are related to allergies, according to Petwalk.com. Scratching of the ears can lead to infections.

    Infections

    • Yeast infections and bacterial infections cause itchy and crusty ear rashes in dogs. Moisture, dirt or wax in the ear canal can lead to ear infections.

    Signs of Infection

    • Signs of an ear infection in the dog include shaking of the head or tilting it toward one side, scratching or rubbing the ears, discharge and odor.

    Treatment

    • Consult a veterinarian when your dog develops an ear rash to ensure that he gets relief as soon as possible. Attempting to treat the condition yourself with over-the-counter remedies could make matters worse or even lead to deafness.
