Role of Steroids in the Treatment of Chronic Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis causes inflammation and irritation in the nasal passages causing nasal congestion and excess mucus. Steroid sprays (nasal corticosteroid sprays) are the first line treatment for chronic allergic rhinitis. Nasal steroid sprays include medications like fluticasone (Flonase), mometasone (Nasonex), flunisolide (Nasarel), triamcinolone (Nasacort AQ), beclomethasone (Beconase AQ), ciclesonide (Omnaris) and budesonide (Rhinocort Aqua).

  1. Treat Inflammation

    • Steroid sprays have an anti-inflammatory effect on the inflammation that occurs in the nasal passages with allergic rhinitis. They ease this inflammation and make it easier to breathe.

    Prevent Inflammation

    • Nasal steroid sprays not only relieve inflammation in the nasal passages, but prevent it as well. They are also prevent sneezing, itchy nose and runny nose that can occur with allergic rhinitis.

    Use Regularly

    • Steroid sprays are prescribed for long-term treatment and and must be used for a few weeks to have an effect. They can be used with other medications like antihistamines and decongestants.

    Short-Term Side Effects

    • Side effects may include irritation and dryness of the nasal passages and sneezing. Headaches and nose bleeds, while uncommon, warrant an immediate doctor's consultation.

    Long-Term Side Effects

    • Steroid sprays may cause growth problems in children, and glaucoma (elevated blood pressure in the eye). However these side effects are rare, according to "The New York Times" online health guide.
