About Laser Printer Resolution

About Laser Printer Resolution thumbnail
Laser printers offer high print resolution.

Of all the different laser printer features, resolution is probably the most important. From documents to photographs, you want your printouts to look sharp. Understanding printer resolution is an important step in getting the print quality you want.

  1. Definition

    • Print resolution is a term describing a printer's potential print quality. Most printers have variable print resolutions for different types of jobs.

    Measuring Print Resolution

    • Print resolution is measured in dots per inch, or "dpi." The higher the dpi, the greater the print quality. Most laser printers offer up to 600 dpi; however, more expensive models offer 1200 dpi printing.

    Determining the Proper Resolution

    • It's important to remember that higher print resolutions use more toner. Everyday printing such as documents or e-mails won't require high-resolution printing. However, you will want to use a higher resolution when printing graphics, particularly photographs.

    Selecting a Print Resolution

    • Use the print driver window to select the desired resolution for print jobs. Typically, resolution is selected using presets such as draft, "economode," normal, maximum and so forth. The wording varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Each preset has a specific dpi associated with it.

    Enhanced Resolution

    • Many printer manufacturers have developed proprietary technologies that effectively "increase" the resolution beyond a printer's mechanical abilities. HP's "Resolution Enhancement Technology" (REt), "FastRes 1200" and Brother's "HQ1200" are examples of this technology.
