What Is the Origin of a Loofah?

In the depths of the ocean, seaweed waves and fish drift gently past the sponge bed. That is not, however, where you will find your loofah.

Luffa, Loofa, Lufa

Whether spelled loofah, luffa, lufa or loofa, it remains the same: the seed pod of a very versatile vegetable. A tasty native of India and the Middle East, the Luffa aegyptiaca Mill bears a strong resemblance to a cucumber or zucchini.

Fruits and Flowers

When smaller (under 4 inches long), the fruit and flowers of the loofah plant can be stir-fried, boiled or fried like okra or made into soup. Avoid the leaves and vines because they may be poisonous.

Under the Skin

When the loofah is mature, it takes on the fibrous appearance that you know. The green outer skin is sloughed off and the seeds are removed and reserved for further planting.

Not Just for the Bath

Gentle enough to scrub your back, your loofah is also quite tough. Use it to put a shine on your car, scrub pots and pans and flatten and trim to use as a bath mat.

Your Loofah Garden

Although grown traditionally in India and the Middle East, loofah can be grown in your own garden, as well. Check your climate zone to see whether your area will support the plant.
