Sinus Lavage in Children

Sinus lavage is a term used to describe the flushing out of the sinus cavities that can become filled with mucus and debris. The practice has gained more and more mainstream acceptance and attention, and medical doctors are incorporating it more in their treatment plans for people with sinus problems. This article explores sinus lavage for children.

  1. Lavage for Children

    • Clinical research has shown that children ages 5 and older having problems such as a sinus infection, postnasal drip or blocked nasal passage benefited from the use of sinus lavage.

    Proetz Method

    • The Proetz method is a way for parents to do sinus lavage in children. The child should lie across the adult's lap while the head is aligned at a 90-degree angle.

    Proetz Method (cont.)

    • Drop a few drops of phenylephrine (available at any drug store) nasal spray into each nostril. Fill both nostrils with a saline solution.

    Proetz Method (cont.)

    • Suction the solution out using a bulb syringe that would seal the nose. Continue filling the opposite nostril with saline and suctioning to create a pump like effect that removes mucus and debris from the nose.

    Warning

    • Always consult a doctor or physician before starting any lavage protocol on a child. Isotonic and hyper tonic may each be beneficial for lavage, so experiment with both.

    Prevention

    • The best way to prevent long-term sinus problems in children is to have them blow their nose completely whenever it gets stuffed.
