What Are Flavanol Antioxidants?

Flavanol antioxidants are part of a group of chemicals known as polyphenol antioxidants. Most often referred to as flavanols, the substance is found in its highest concentration in cocoa and to a lesser extent in processed chocolate products. Antioxidants are believed to offer a number of health benefits.

  1. Flavanol Antioxidants

    • Flavanol antioxidants are similar to the antioxidants found in berries and tea that are touted for their anti-aging properties. Cocoa beans contain concentrated sources of flavanol antioxidants.

    Benefits of Flavanol Antioxidants

    • According to a study by the American College of Cardiology and quoted in Sciencedaily.com, flavanols increase nitric oxide in blood of smokers and seems to reverse smoking related damage to blood vessels. In a Dutch study quoted by UABHealth.org, flavanols lowered blood pressure and reduced the chance of heart disease.

    Sources of Flavanol Antioxidants

    • According to the Hershey Company, natural cocoa powder has the highest concentration of flavanol. Unsweetened baking chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate follow, in that order, as flavanol sources.

    Other Benefits of Flavanol Antioxidants

    • According to a Feb. 9, 2005 Washington Post article, the flavanol in chocolate reduces blood clotting and inflammation. Other studies have found flavanol to have an effect on sun sensitivity.

    Cautions for Chocolate Consumption

    • The flavanols found in chocolate are similar to the antioxidants found in green teas, berries and red wine. However, chocolate can contain a significant amount of calories.
