What Is the Preplanning Process of Grant Proposal Writing?

Whether it is your first proposal or your 50th, the preplanning process of grant writing is essential to the success of your request for funding.

  1. Needs Assessment

    • Conduct a needs assessment of your organization to identify and prioritize gaps in service and areas your target population needs change. A gap analysis should focus not only on the current situation, but also the desired situation to identify the needs, purpose, goals and objectives of your programs.

    Data Collection

    • Before you begin writing your grant proposal, gather the documentation required to support your request. You should have a clear view of your programs, your target population and the community as a whole.

    Activity Report

    • Develop a monthly report to monitor all of the grants you are applying for, and note whether they are being written, have been submitted, are pending or are funded.

    Budget

    • Outline how much the project will cost, and create a budget for the next three years, showing income and expenses. Expenses can be divided into three sections including personnel, direct project expenses and overhead. Income can be divided into earned income and contributed income.

    Tip

    • Don't assume the funder will know everything about the subject you are writing about, so do your research. If you have a complex situation, add informative information and statistics to back your claims, and prove why the situation is important through facts and human interest.
