What Are the Treatments for Dry Flaky Skin on Lower Legs?

The lower legs are a common area for dry skin, or xerosis. Home therapies are helpful, but in severe cases, especially when skin is cracked or bleeding, a doctor is needed.

  1. Moisturizer

    • Apply moisturizer to skin frequently. Moisturizer prevents water from evaporating off of your skin. For the same effect, apply baby oil while the skin is still moist.

    Shower Time & Temperature

    • Limit your shower or bath to less than 15 minutes and use cooler water.

    Humidifier

    • Use an indoor home humidifier to keep the air in your home from drying out. Ideal home humidity is 40 percent to 45 percent.

    Fabrics

    • Wear fabrics that are gentle on the skin, like cotton or silk.

    Soap

    • Use gentle skin cleansers or body wash with moisturizing agents. Do not use deodorant soaps that contain detergents.

    Serious Conditions

    • In serious cases a doctor may recommend a cream with lactic acid or urea. If condition progresses, hydro-cortisone lotions may be prescribed.
