What Training Is Needed to Be a Soccer Coach?

Becoming a soccer coach takes a different route in different countries. The majority of national soccer (football) associations provide training at regional and national levels, depending on the level of coaching education required for the individual. The coaching system in the United States is closely related to the model created by the Scottish Football Association.

  1. Beginning Coaching

    • The National Soccer Association of America (NSCAA) offers two coaching courses aimed at new coaches, beginning with the state diploma and regional diploma for coaching children from ages 6 to 19.

    Youth Coaching

    • The next levels of coaching education include the age-specific coaching courses offered by the U.S. Youth Soccer Association (USYSA). These courses are aimed at coaches of teams with players under 6 to under 10 and promote the benefits of a fun game-based approach to coaching.

    E and D Licenses

    • The "E" and "D" licenses are offered by the USYSA and develop the skills of the coach in technical development of each player within the tactical approach of the team. These licenses involve both classroom and practical field lessons.

    C License

    • This is the first of three national-level licenses taught by the U.S. Soccer Federation that involving oral, practical and written exams. Participants in the C license program must be 18 years of age and have held the D license for 12 months; experienced players or coaches can have these requirements waived upon producing evidence of their soccer history.

    B License

    • The B license course follows the structure of the C license, with five days of instruction and two days of exams. Participants must hold the C license for 12 months and be 18 years old; waivers are again available related to experience and for similar coaching qualifications from another country.

    A License

    • Unlike the "C" and "B" licenses, the USSF "A" license remains valid for four years, with qualified coaches continuing their coaching education to keep the license valid. A license candidate must be 21 years old and have held the B license for 12 months; no waivers are available.
