What Is an American Express Black Credit Card?

In the credit card world, the color of your card is an indication of power---credit power that is! For American Express the most powerful color is black, with a hint of intrigue, as this is an "invitation only" card.

  1. Definition

    • American Express generally offers three types of cards---green, gold and platinum---and each have particular fees and benefits. But a fourth card called the Centurion card is special, and is commonly known as the black card.

    History

    • The black card was introduced in 1999. The American Express website does not provide any details, except to say it is by invitation only.

    What is Different?

    • The black card offers a high (some report almost unlimited) credit limit. Holders receive special concierge and travel agent services, as well as deals with airlines, hotels and other travel providers.

    Requirements

    • Holders must pay an initiation fee of $5,000 and an annual fee of $2,500. Annual charges to the card must be at least $250,000, and the holder must have an excellent, unblemished credit history.

    How to Get One

    • First, you must be a current platinum card holder and charge (and pay) up to the lower limits of a Centurion card, or $250,000 annually. Then, you must just wait for American Express to offer you one.
