The Citrus Diet is a diet in which the dieter consumes only citrus fruit and juices for 48 hours. As with any fad diet, it comes with its pros and cons.

  1. Diet Rules

    • The rules are simple. For two days, the dieter is only allowed to eat limes, grapefruits, oranges, and lemons. Dieters are also encouraged to follow their regular exercise routines.

    Benefits

    • Vitamin C strengthens blood vessels, tissues and bones. Citrus fruits also have high detoxifying effects and provide high levels of energy.

    Misconceptions

    • Despite those "high levels of energy," if your body is not taking in enough calories, you will feel tired and lack energy. Essentially, the lack of other nutrients is contradicting the positive effects of the citrus in this case.

    Dangers

    • Too much vitamin C in your system can cause heartburn and uncontrollable diarrhea. A long-term effect of relying on this type of diet is the breakdown of tooth enamel, due to the high acidity found in citrus.

    Does the Diet Work?

    • In reality, dieters using this will mainly lose water weight and put the weight right back on as soon as they consume regular food again. It is not recommended for those who want to maintain their weight loss.
