Why Is it Good to Donate Organs?

Organ donation has many benefits. One donor may help up to 50 individuals affected by serious health conditions. Many parts of the body can be used for organ donation, including the kidneys, liver, heart and lungs.

  1. For the Grieving

    • The grieving process can be helped if the family knows that the deceased loved one's organs will help others.

    The Recipient

    • A person receiving a donated organ can get a new life. For example, someone suffering from kidney disease will no longer be reliant upon dialysis machines.

    Costs

    • The costs of transplanting a donated organ and the follow-up care are usually less than the medical care required to treat a condition, especially over an extended period.

    Pancreas Transplant

    • People with diabetes can be freed from their daily insulin routine if they receive a donated pancreas.

    Heart Transplant

    • Children born with defective heart valves, or adults with a diseased heart, can gain new life expectancy from a transplant.

    A Social Responsibility

    • Some people feel organ donation is a social responsibility and choose to help the lives of others after they die.
