    • Chlorhexidine Solution is made by Actavis Mid Atlantic and was approved on December 28, 1995. The brand names are Peridex and PerioGard.

    Function

    • Chlorhexidine is a "topical antimicrobial," meaning that it kills bacteria by destroying their cell membranes. It is only available by prescription.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include staining of teeth, tartar, changes in taste, and mild irritation. Severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling), numbness or tingling in the mouth, and mouth sores.
