What Is Chlorhexidine Solution?

Chlorhexidine Solution is used to treat gingivitis between dental visits. Its actual name is Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Solution (0.12%).

  1. History

    • Chlorhexidine Solution is made by Actavis Mid Atlantic and was approved on December 28, 1995. The brand names are Peridex and PerioGard.

    Function

    • Chlorhexidine is a "topical antimicrobial," meaning that it kills bacteria by destroying their cell membranes. It is only available by prescription.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include staining of teeth, tartar, changes in taste, and mild irritation. Severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling), numbness or tingling in the mouth, and mouth sores.

    Warning

    • Do not use chlorhexidine with other mouthwashes. Do not swallow chlorhexidine. Call the doctor or dentist if you experience severe side effects.
