Metformin Acne Treatment

Metformin is a prescription drug that is effective in treating specific acne cases. It is used to treat the type of acne that results from hormonal imbalances that are caused by abnormal ovarian conditions.

  1. Causes

    • Most cases of acne are caused by excess sebum on the skin or by bacteria that enter the pores, breeds and causes inflammation. Metformin is not used for these acne cases.

    Conditions

    • Polycystic ovarian syndrome causes many physical problems, among them is an excess of testosterone. This off-kilter hormone balance often results in acne as well as excess facial hair.

    Treatment

    • Metformin treats the hormonal cause of both acne and facial hair in women caused by POS. This is often the main goal of prescribing the drug and the treatment of acne is a secondary benefit.

    Significance

    • Some doctors do prescribe Metformin as an off-label treatment of the acne caused by POS rather than as a treatment of POS itself.

    Considerations

    • The side effects of Metformin often include gastrointestinal problems like abdominal cramps and bloating. In as many as 30 percent of cases, it causes the inability to absorb vitamin B12.
