Natural Treatment for Dry Eye in Dogs

A dog with dry eyes is very uncomfortable and in many cases can be treated naturally rather than with a prescription. Treating dry eye not only makes the dog more comfortable, but also lessens the possibility of more-serious conditions.

  1. Features

    • Some dogs develop dry eyes because they are not producing tears. The condition can be painful and can lead to blindness, so treatment is critical.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of dry eyes include redness, green discharge from one or both eyes, eye infections and excessive blinking. Dry eyes can be caused by viruses, autoimmune conditions, hypothyroidism and trauma to the eye.

    Natural Treatments

    • Chamomile that has been brewed into a tea and cooled can be used to help soothe a dog's eye. Dip a white cotton washcloth in chamomile and apply to the outside of the dog's eyes several times a day.

    Other Treatment

    • Eyewashes can help clear out debris and be helpful in preventing infection. Artificial tears and ointments also can be used to soothe the dog's eyes.

    Considerations

    • An infection in the eye needs to be treated by a veterinarian.
