Apricot seeds have many medicinal benefits.

Apricots are small, golden- to orange-colored fruits with a smooth skin. They are eaten fresh, dried and canned year round. The fruit is loaded with vitamins and minerals, and apricot seeds have been used for many medicinal purposes.

  1. Significance

    • Apricots are rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, and potassium. They are especially good for eyesight and as a source of an antioxidant. They are also low in calories.

    Seed Benefits

    • Apricot seeds naturally contain vitamin B17, also known as laetrile, which is used for its anticancer properties.

    Potential

    • Apricot seeds are the richest source of vitamin B17 and nitrolosides. They are also rich in protein, polyunsaturated fats and minerals. These together work to ward off cancer.

    Amygdalin

    • Amygdalin is naturally found in apricot seeds. This compound is used as an anticancer fighter.

    Warning

    • An active ingredient in laetrile, found in apricot seeds, is cyanide. Cyanide is a highly poisonous substance.

    Side Effects

    • Some side effects reported from high doses of apricot seeds include headache, dizziness, liver damage, drop in blood pressure, fever, nerve damage, coma and even death. Eating 50 to 60 apricot seeds, or 50 grams of laetrile, can prove fatal.
