What Is the Difference Between a Medical MD & MS?
Doctors earn degrees depending on the type of medicine they specialize in as well as the country in which they practice. A medical doctor and a master of surgery are doctors with different specializations.

Doctorate Degrees
-
A doctor of medicine (MD) and a master of surgery (MS) are both medical doctors who have received their medical degrees from a medical school.
MS Schooling
-
An MS must earn his medical degree as a prerequisite to obtaining an MS degree. The MS degree is typically an additional one- to three-year program.

MS Degree Locations

MS degrees are awarded by universities in the Commonwealth of Nations (an intergovernmental organization of 53 independent member states, not a political union).
PhD and MS Degrees
-
To obtain an MS degree, you must already have either an MD or your country's equivalent. A PhD in the United States is similar to a master of science degree, as they are more advanced than a bachelor's degree and both have a specialty attached to them. In the United States, MDs are highly regarded because they practice medicine, and a PhD works more closely in the research of medicine and diseases.
MS in the US
-
In the United States, to specialize in a medical field or in surgery, a medical doctor must complete time as a resident and/or perform a fellowship if she wants to obtain specialized training. A specialty of medicine is completed as a resident (a physician who has finished medical school and internship and is now receiving training in a specialized area), and a specialized area of medicine is obtained with an additional two or three years in a fellowship.
