Aluminum Welding Safety

Welding aluminum can be done either with a wire feed welder or a stick machine. All the general welding safety rules apply, and following them can avoid dangerous accidents.

  1. Welding Hood

    • Always wear a protective welding hood when welding aluminum. The UV rays created by the welding process are very harmful to the eyes.

    Protective Gear

    • Wear thick-leather welding gloves, long jeans, boots and a welding jacket to provide maximum protection against sparks and heat caused by welding.

    Work Environment

    • Clearing the work area of any flammable items, such as rags, greatly reduces the risk of fire caused by sparks.

    Cable Routing

    • Always route the welding leads and cables from the welder to the steel so that nobody can trip on them.

    Inspection

    • Inspect the machine to ensure that all the cords and welding leads are free of defects and that no bare wire is showing before welding aluminum.

    Clean Up

    • Always turn the welder off and put the cords and leads safely away after welding aluminum. Clean up any tools and materials used in the project so they don't become a hazard.
