Softball Bats Vs. Baseball Bats

Baseball bats and softball bats vary in many ways.

Baseball bats and softball bats are constructed differently to accommodate the nature of their respective sports. While similar in appearance and use, both types of bats feature differences in certain aspects of their anatomy.

  1. Barrels

    • The barrel of a baseball bat is has a larger diameter than that of a softball bat. Baseball bat barrels have a maximum possible diameter of 2 ¾ inches, while softball bat barrels range only up to 2 ¼ inches.

    Drops

    • The drop of a bat is the bat's length minus its weight. While softball bats do not adhere to regulations concerning drops, baseball bat drops may not exceed certain totals depending on the level of play.

    Markings

    • Slow-pitch softball bats are more similar in design to baseball bats than fast-pitch bats are, but they do contain a pair of distinctive markings. One is the BPF rating, which is a standard that slow-pitch bats must meet, and the other is the Amateur Softball Association logo.

    Design

    • Fast-pitch softball bats have bottle-like appearance that no baseball bats have. This helps make them easy to differentiate.

    Stiffness

    • Due to the elasticity differences in baseballs and softballs, each sport's bats also differ in barrel stiffness.
