OSHA Requirements for Reflective Clothing
You may have seen them on the side of the road, and if you did, they did their job. Reflective vests are common in workplaces and a common topic within various federal regulations.
-
Different Classes of Vests
-
There are three different kinds of reflective vests worn on job sites: the American National Standards Institute Class I, Class II and Class III vests. The main difference between the three types of vests is that the Class I and II are sleeveless, with the Class I being slightly smaller; and the Class III has sleeves.
Responsibility for Wear
-
Employers are responsible for giving access to reflective vests when needed for workers under Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, Section 1910.132.
-
Distance of Visibility
-
All vests must be seen from a distance of 1,000 feet.
Colors of Vests
-
The background of the vests must be fluorescent orange-red or fluorescent yellow-green, and a secondary reflective material color shall be either orange, yellow, white, silver, yellow-green or a fluorescent version of these colors.
Enforcement
-
Enforcement of reflective vest regulations on highways is done in tandem between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Federal Highway Administration.
