LOG1 files are generally copies or backups of some form of software or system logging. Advanced users will save off or copy a log file when they want to start a fresh log but don’t want to delete the previous logging, making LOG1 a fairly common file extension in debugging and troubleshooting environments.
Old Log Files
It is standard practice in many IT circles to save off old log files with an extension like "LOG1," "LOGSAV" or "LOG[date]" when troubleshooting a software problem. Users do this so that when a new .LOG file is generated, they know exactly where it starts without wading through lines of old log data.
No "Real" Uses
Online searches of file-extension databases such as file-extension.net (see references) and FILExt return no information about the “LOG1" extension. "LOG1" has no widespread uses in out-of-the-box software, but it has obvious similarities to "LOG," which is a universally-used extension for text-based log files.
Changing a file extension is as simple as renaming a file. Another user may have named off an unidentified or corrupt log file from "LOG" to "LOG1." Although it would be confusing and nonintuitive, any file (e.g., graphic, document, spreadsheet) could be renamed with a LOG1 extension by any computer user with basic skills.
A user might accidentally enter "LOG1" instead of "LOG" when generating or saving a log file. In Windows dialogue boxes, users can hit the "Tab" key to quickly jump from field to field. The tab key’s proximity to the "1" key can result in just such a typographical error.
Deleting LOG1 Files
Log files for some programs can get very large, very fast, so it’s good practice to purge logs that are no longer needed. However, if you are in an office or organizational environment, check with your system administrator before deleting saved-off logs.
