    • Ambien is the brand name of zolpidem tartrate, a prescription sleep aid. It is used for short-term treatment of insomnia.

    Zolpidem tartrate (salt)

    • Zolpidem is a cation with a charge of 1+. In Ambien, zolpidem is found as a salt of tartrate (an organic anion with a charge of 2-).

    Chemical Formula

    • The chemical formula of zolpidem is C19H21N3O. Zolpidem tartrate's systematic name, which tells chemists how the atoms are arranged, is N,N,6-trimethyl-2-p-tolylimidazo[1,2-a] pyridine-3-acetamide L-(+)-tartrate (2:1).

    Structure

    • Zolpidem is an imidazopyridine, meaning it has a structure called an imidazole group bound to a pyridine ring. There is an additional pyridine ring with a methyl group. The main functional group is an acetamide with two methyl groups.

    Properties

    • Pure zolpidem tartrate is a crystalline powder, off-white in color, only slightly soluble in water, with a molecular weight of 764.88. Inactive ingredients in an Ambien tablet consist of various binders, including hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and lactose.
