When Do Tires Need to Be Replaced?

Tires should be replaced when they are too damaged to repair, or the tread has worn out. The tire industry provides guidelines for both conditions.

  1. Identification

    • The tire tread is considered worn out and the tires should be replaced when the tread depth is less than 1/16 of a inch. Most tires have wear indicators that will appear as bars across the tread when the tread is worn down to replacement level.

    Tip

    • The traditional way to measure worn tread is to stick a penny in the tread with President Lincoln's head towards the tire. If you can see the top of Mr. Lincoln's head, the tread depth is less than 1/16 of an inch.

    Considerations

    • Holes or bulges in a tire sidewall require that the tire be replaced. Holes in the tread area less than 1/4 inch can be repaired. Larger holes require tire replacement.

    Warning

    • A tire that has been driven on when flat must be replaced. Internal damage may not be visible, but could result in catastrophic failure if the tire is re-pressurized and driven.

    Time Frame

    • Tires over 6 years old should be replaced even if they are not too worn. Motorhomes and other vehicles that are not driven many miles are prone to overage tires.
