What Is a Spread Offense in Football?
The spread offense has became a very popular offense at every level of football. This type of offense is designed to allow teams to score a lot of points. If a team has a fast and quick quarterback, the offensive becomes more of a threat due to the ability of the quarterback to run and throw.

Shotgun
-
Almost all formations of the spread offensive are in the shotgun. This formation involves the quarterback standing a few yards behind the center.
Wide Receivers
-
Most spread formations involve four or five wide receivers. Having this many wide receivers puts the defense in a vulnerable position by making the defense "spread" itself all over the field in able to defend against the offense.
-
Running Backs
-
There is usually only one running back for a spread formation. The running back is expected to catch just as well as he blocks and runs.
Offensive Linemen
-
The offensive lineman are expected to block without any help from tight ends and running backs. Most eligible receivers are running passing routes, making the lineman block everybody themselves.
Variations
-
There have been several variations to the spread offense. The spread option and pistol offense have characteristics of the spread.
