How Long Do Hot Water Heaters Last?
Hot water heater longevity depends on several factors. Do you have a gas or electric hot water heater? How much hot water do you use and how hard is your water? Water hardness is a major contributing factor to hot water longevity. But there are things you can do to prolong the life of your hot water heater.
-
Gas vs Electric
-
Gas hot water heaters can last up to 10 years while electric hot water heaters can last up to 15 years. Gas hot water heaters can be more energy efficient but they also require more maintenance.
Hard Water
-
All water has minerals in it. Heating water causes these minerals to collect in the bottom of your hot water heater as sediment. Over time these sediments build up in the bottom of your tank.
Sedimentation Damage
-
Sediments can damage the bottom of your tank. They can reduce the efficiency of your tank and they can cause elements to prematurely burn out.
Draining Sediments
-
At least once or twice per year you should flush your tank. Just connect a garden hose to the drain faucet near the bottom of your tank and drain 10 to 20 gallons of water outside or into a nearby sink. When the water runs clear you will have removed the sediment build-up (see resources for detailed step-by-step process).
Elements
-
If you are noticing your water is not as hot or does not last as long you could have a bad element. Heating elements can burn out, but this does not mean you need to replace your hot water heater. Elements can be replaced separately and they typically cost less than $20.
