L-Lysine Dose for Cats

Feline herpes is one of the most common respiratory ailments in cats. Since the disease is viral, routine antibiotics are ineffective against herpes. However, one supplement that has proven to be extremely effective in reducing the length and severity of feline herpes outbreaks is L-lysine. Available without a prescription, it can help cats battle the feline herpes virus.

  1. What Is L-Lysine?

    • L-lysine is an antiviral medication that can help control and treat the feline herpes virus. L-lysine displaces arginine, an amino acid that is necessary for the feline herpes virus to replicate.

L-lysine has been shown to reduce the symptoms of feline herpes, including conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and congestion. Regular use of L-lysine also reduces viral shedding and mitigates viral flare-ups.

    L-Lysine Products

    • L-lysine can be administered to cats in a variety of forms, the most common of which is Viralys powder, which can be sprinkled over food. It is also available as Viralys gel, Enisyl-F lysine gel and Enisyl-F lysine treats. All of these common, commercial L-lysine products are made by Vétoquinol USA.

    Dosage for Enisyl-F

    • Vétoquinol recommends using Enisyl-F gel during flare-ups. The dosage for adult cats is one pump of the gel per day, and for kittens, 1/2 pump per day. Each pump delivers 250mg of L-lysine. During maintenance periods, Enisyl-F can be properly dosed through five to 10 treats per day for adult cats and up to five treats per day for kittens.

    Dosage for Viralys

    • Viralys is available in gel or powder forms and is primarily recommended as a maintenance supplement. Adult cats should be given 5oz. and kittens 2.5oz. of the gel per day. The powder form may be more appropriate for multi-cat households. Each scoop of Viralys powder contains 250mg of L-lysine. One scoop per cat per day should be added to the cats' food.
