Eucalyptus oil is steam distilled from the leaves of eucalyptus trees. The benefits of using eucalyptus oil come mostly from its properties as an antiseptic, which helps kill germs, and an expectorant, which loosens mucous.

According to MedlinePlus, eucalyptus oil contains 70 to 85 percent 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), depending on the variety. Eucalyptol is an ingredient in some mouthwashes, including Listerine®, and dental products.

Respiratory Uses

MedlinePlus reports that a common use of eucalyptus oil is as a decongestant and expectorant for upper respiratory tract infections or inflammations. Many over-the-counter cough and cold lozenges, inhalation vapors and topical ointments contain eucalyptus. You can use eucalyptus oil in a sauna or stream bath by placing a few drops on the hot rocks.
