While there are similarities between Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis, the causes and treatments differ

Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are painful conditions where the joints of the body deteriorate. However, while there are similarities, there are also distinct differences between the two diseases.

  1. Factors in Common

    • Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are incurable conditions. However, there are effective treatments available for both that can slow the progression of the disease and treat symptoms.

    Osteoarthritis

    • This kind of arthritis is the result of repeated use of the joints. The joint lining becomes inflamed because of the breakdown of cartilage.

    Osteoarthritis Treatment

    • Pain in osteoarthritis is often treated with over the counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Pine Bark extract is also being shown to have successful results in treating osteoarthritis pain.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

    • Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints of the body, causing inflammation.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments

    • Typical treatments for rheumatoid arthritis include medications known to suppress the immune system and slow the progression of the disease. It may also be treated with steroids, to help control inflammation.

    Common Treatments

    • For pain, both kinds of arthritis may be treated with prescription pain medications such as Ultram. Also, when there is severe damage, joint replacement surgery may be considered as an option.
