  1. Manufacturer

    • Astelin, which is also known as azelastine (HCL) is a nasal spray manufactured by Carter-Wallace Laboratories, a division of Carter-Wallace Inc. The drug is marketed by Meda Pharmeceuticals, Inc. The drug was released as a generic in 1996, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

    Usage

    • For treatment of seasonal allergies in adults and children over 12 years, use one to two sprays of medication into each nostril twice daily. For treatment of environmental irritants in the same age group, use two sprays of medication into nostrils twice daily. Do not take two doses to make up for missing a single dose.

    How it Works

    • Astelin blocks histamines, or substances that play a role in many allergic reactions.

    Side Effects

    • Some side effects include drowsiness, bitter taste, tiredness, weight gain, muscle pain and burning in the nasal passages, according to Medline Plus.

    Warnings

    • This medication should not be used by individuals with a "known hypersensivity to azelastine hydrochloride or any of its components," according to Daily Med. Tell your doctor you are taking Astelin prior to any surgery, including dental surgery.
