Menstrual irregularities are often accompanied by depression.

Emotional disturbances such as depression are often closely linked to menstruation. In many cases, women who suffer from disorders and conditions that cause menstrual irregularities find themselves suffering from depression, as well.

  1. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

    • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) causes severe emotional symptoms, such as depression, tension and irritability, prior to menstruation. In addition to these emotional symptoms, physical irregularities, including severe bloating, breast tenderness, joint and/or muscle pain, and headaches are also associated with PMDD.

    Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects the menstrual cycle and female hormones. Women who suffer from PCOS have irregular periods, cysts on the ovaries and may suffer from depression due to the changes in hormone levels, appearance and fertility that are associated with this disorder.

    Dysmenorrhea

    • Dysmenorrhea, a menstrual disorder marked by long, painful periods, is often accompanied by depression.

    Endometriosis

    • Endometriosis, a condition that results in an overgrowth of uterine tissue in the pelvic area and is associated with heavy, painful periods and infertility can present with depression as a symptom.

    Amenorrhea

    • Amenorrhea, or the absence of periods, is not a disorder, but is a menstrual irregularity that is often associated with emotional and mental disturbances, such as depression, anxiety disorders and eating disorders.
