Dodge Dart Differential Information

A car differential

Though Dodge produced several different vehicles from 1960 to 1976 with the "Dart" nomenclature, it is the compact giant-killer produced from 1963-76 that garners the most attention. This incarnation is the most commonly hot-rodded, and (arguably) the most beloved of the series.

  1. Basics

    • Sports versions of the Dart used the 8 3/4-inch differential, while straight six versions used a smaller, weaker version of the same.

    Sure Grip

    • This is Chrysler's name for a posi-traction or locking diff. This type uses a series of clutches in the diff that lock the rear tires together under acceleration.

    Interchange

    • In general, Dart rear-ends will interchange with similarly-equipped mid-sized Chrysler cars of the same generation. These include the Plymouth Valiant, Dodge Demon and Dodge Lancer.

    Straight Six Weakness

    • The diff used in most straight six Darts is considered by most to be a fairly reliable unit at stock power levels, but is known to fail at anything exceeding 300 ft.lbs. of torque.

    8 3/4 Rear Ends

    • Comparable to the ford 9-inch or GM 12-Bolt rear, the Chrysler 8 3/4-inch rear end is both strong and versatile. This is the rear of choice for most big-block clone cars.
