Definition of Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is defined as the body's way of creating heat. Thermogenesis is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamus gland.

  1. Exercise Thermogenesis

    • Exercise thermogenesis occurs as a response to physical exercise. Muscles work more effectively when they are warm.

    Diet Thermogenesis

    • Diet thermogenesis occurs after a large meal has been eaten in response to the extra energy that the body uses to digest a large amount of food.

    Thermo-Regulatory Thermogenesis

    • Thermo-regulatory thermogenesis occurs when the body shivers as a response to the need to produce heat to regulate its core temperature. This response occurs when the environmental temperature is lower than the body's core temperature.

    Artificial Thermogenesis

    • Thermogenesis can be artificially induced in the human body by consumption of stimulants such as caffeine or ephedra. Sweating may occur if large amounts of these substances are ingested.

    Side Effects

    • According to Dr. Fred Spencer, people that experience thermogenesis may notice an increase in energy and a decrease in appetite. Thermogenesis increases the body's metabolism, which can lead to weight loss.
