Becoming a Naturalized American Citizen

If you wish to become a naturalized American citizen, you must meet certain criteria. These include requirements regarding residency, character and knowledge about the United States. There is also an application process to be completed.

  1. Residency in the United States

    • Anyone who wishes to apply to become a naturalized American citizen must meet certain residency requirements. These include the length of time spent in the United States. The specific requirements can vary a great deal depending on your situation. The complete list of requirements can can be found in "A Guide to Naturalization," published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). See the References section for the link.

    Good Moral Character

    • In order to become a naturalized American citizen, you must be of good moral character and truthful during the interview process. When making a decision regarding citizenship, USCIS considers your criminal record and other factors, such as your history of drunkenness, prostitution, illegal gambling and using controlled substances.

    English and Civics Knowledge

    • You must have a working knowledge of basic English including speaking, reading and writing. You must also have a basic understanding of American history and government that will be assessed through a written test.

    Attachment to the Constitution

    • You must demonstrate a commitment to the United States and the Constitution. This is done by taking an oath that includes renouncing foreign allegiances and being willing to serve the United States armed forces if called upon to do so.

    Additional Steps in Naturalization Process

    • In addition to completing the naturalization application, you are required to have passport photos taken, collect necessary paperwork, be fingerprinted, undergo an interview, and take the English and civics (government) tests. Once all of the requirements have been met, you will attend a special ceremony during which time you take the Oath of Allegiance and receive a Certificate of Naturalization.
