Lice Treatment With Mayo

Lice infestation, from mild to extreme, is stressful on everyone involved. Treatments are messy, expensive and sometimes irritating. Parents facing a lice infestation may not want to use pediculicides, a pesticide specially formulated for killing lice, for fear it may cause unnecessary harm.

Home remedies

Parents who are looking for safer, and much less inexpensive treatments for lice may turn to home remedies, using items they may already have in their homes.

Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is a wildly popular home remedy for lice. It is based on the idea that the thick consistency of the mayonnaise will smother the lice bugs.

Effects on eggs

It is also believed that lice eggs (nits) are loosened by the mayonnaise, making their removal an easier process. It should be noted, however, that mayonnaise will not kill lice eggs.

Considerations

Using mayonnaise for lice treatments can be extremely messy and smelly. Hair should be saturated completely and covered with a plastic shower cap. It can be left on overnight. It may take several shampoos to remove all the mayonnaise from the hair.

Warning

Because mayonnaise needs refrigeration, it is likely it will spoil overnight. Do you best to keep your child from playing, touching or putting her hair in her mouth.
