Male Human Papilloma Virus Diagnosis

Approximately 20 million Americans are affected with HPV, or the human papilloma virus, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While most people associate HPV with women due to the risk of cervical cancer associated with this sexually transmitted disease (STD), the condition can also be diagnosed in men.

  1. Cause

    • The human papilloma virus is spread through oral, sexual or anal intercourse. Men are equally at risk for developing the disease as women, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Symptoms

    • The most common symptom of the human papilloma virus that leads to diagnosis of the disease in men is the appearance of white, skin-colored or gray warts that resemble cauliflower around your genitals. These growths normally develop on your penis, scrotum or around your anus.

    Diagnosis Techniques

    • For heterosexual men, the most common diagnostic method for HPV is the use of a blood test capable of detecting the DNA of around 13 strains of the human papilloma virus. In homosexual men, doctors may use a Pap test, where a sample of cells is taken from around your anus and examined under a microscope.

    Risks

    • In men, the human papilloma virus poses a risk for cancer of the penis and anus as well as oropharyngeal cancer, or cancer of the pharynx, warns the Mayo Clinic.

    Prevention

    • There is currently no vaccine available for men to prevent contracting HPV. In order to protect yourself, use a condom for oral, vaginal and anal intercourse.
