Use the Internet safely.

The Internet is a powerful tool that helps to transfer information all over the world. It can also be a source of many different kinds of safety hazards for any user. Use good Internet safety practices to keep you and your family safe on the Internet.

  1. Time Frame

    • Microsoft suggests establishing Internet rules with your children as early as possible. Teach children 10 years of age and younger to not give out personal information on the Internet and to avoid contact with people they do not know. Establishing these rules at a young age can be the foundation for better Internet safety habits as they get older.

    Email

    • OnGuardOnLine.gov is the federal government's Internet safety resource and it suggests not clicking on links and offers in suspicious emails because that could load viruses or spy ware onto your computer.

    Identity Theft

    • If you do not employ safe Internet practices when buying items online you may be opening yourself up for identity theft. Always protect your personal information by using secure websites.

    Downloads

    • Downloads can contain viruses and other harmful programming that can damage your computer and steal your personal information. Use firewalls and anti-virus software to detect possible problems and do not download software from a suspicious site.

    Online Auctions

    • If you have an online auction account, be sure to monitor it often to prevent people from hacking into your account and using it to buy and sell products without your knowledge.
