What is a Marine's Job Description?

The United States Marine Corps is one of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces. Formed in 1775, the Marine Corps fights threats and implements policies abroad through the use of force.

Careers Within the Marines

  • Marines are considered “primarily a warrior, skilled in the art of warfare.” Some are infantrymen, some engineers, some fly helicopters. Alongside these varied roles, however, Marines also may build long careers within a variety of functions including administration, medicine, music and the law.

Basic Training

  • All enlistees in the Marine Corps must successfully complete 12 weeks of basic training consisting of intense mental and physical exercises. This is training is conducted at either Parris Island, South Carolina, or San Diego, California.

Commitment

  • Once basic training has been completed, a Marine must commit to a minimum of four years of service.

Age and Educational Eligibility Requirements

  • To enlist in the United States Marine Corps, an applicant must be between the ages of 17 and 29. Additionally, a candidate must have successfully completed or be working toward the completion of a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Compensation

  • Marines are compensated in two distinct ways: salary and allowances (for example, housing allowance). The rate of this compensation is directly aligned with the rank of the individual Marine.
