Medication for Hay Fever

Hay fever affects the nasal passages.

Hay fever is another name for allergic rhinitis. It can be a bothersome condition that disrupts daily functioning. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 20 percent of all people suffer from hay fever at some point. However, treatments are available to alleviate symptoms.

Symptoms

Watery or itchy eyes, congestion, runny nose, cough, and frequent sneezing are symptoms of hay fever. Sinus or facial pain and pressure may also occur. Hay fever may cause problems with sleep leading to daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and irritability. These symptoms are treatable.

Causes

Hay fever occurs in response to exposure to nasal allergens such as pet dander, dust, pollen and dust mites. Hay fever may occur intermittently or may last continually.

Decongestants

Decongestants from your doctor or from the drug store treat sinus and nasal congestion.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines treat watery or itchy eyes, and a runny nose. These are available in prescription and over-the-counter forms.

Corticosteroids

Prescription nasal corticosteroids can be used to reduce hay fever symptoms. Severe hay fever symptoms may be treated with oral corticosteroids such as prednisone.
