Low vision is a specific visual condition that primarily affects people 65 years and older. It is defined as having difficulty seeing, even with corrective lenses or surgery.

While some vision changes are normal as we age, low vision is not simply the result of getting older.
Cause

Low vision can result from eye disease or other health conditions, such as diabetes. Eye injuries or birth defects can also contribute to the development of this condition.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of low vision include having difficulty in recognizing faces, matching colors and reading names of stores. Lights may seem dimmer than they used to even if no change has taken place in the brightness.
Diagnosis

The best way to diagnose the development of low vision is to have regular dilated-eye exams so your eye doctor has a history to compare results.
Treatment

Depending upon the severity of your vision loss, a multitude of devices are available to help with low vision. Magnifying glasses may be necessary for close-up viewing, and surgery may be an option.
