What Disorders Do Anti Anxiety Drugs Treat?

There are many different types of anti anxiety drugs each designed to decrease the effects of stress on the body. Two common types of anti anxiety drugs are benzodiazepines (BZs) and buspirone (BuSpar).

  1. Indications for Anti Anxiety Medications

    • Benzodiazepines and buspirone are used for broad spectrum of anxiety disorders like general anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder and sleep disorders. They can also be used as an adjunct to mood and other psychiatric conditions with an anxiety component.

    Detox

    • Benzodiazepines are also the primary medication used for detoxification from alcohol and used in the prevention of withdrawal symptoms and delerious tremens in alcoholics.

    Treatments Used in Hepatic Dysfunction

    • Lorazepam, oxazepam and temazepam are not metabolized by the liver and are safe for patients with either cirrhosis or any type of hepatic insufficiency.

    Seizures

    • Benzodiazepines are used in seizure disorders in order to raise the seizure threshold in epileptics and other at risk populations.

    Muscle Relaxants

    • Although not as commonly used, anti anxiety medications can be indicated as muscle relaxants for those with muscle tension spasms.
