Salmonella Bacteria in Cats

Salmonella Bacteria in Cats thumbnail
Outdoor cats can contract salmonella bacteria from an infected bird, mouse or other type of prey.

With more than 2,000 types of salmonella bacteria in the world, it is no surprise that an animal can carry two or more different types. Salmonella is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be spread from household pets to humans.

  1. Causes

    • Salmonella bacteria is spread through contaminated feces or saliva of an infected person or animal. It can also be found in food sources for both pets and people.

    Types

    • Salmonella can be the cause of several feline health issues including salmonellosis, septicemia and gastroenteritis.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a salmonella related illness include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, lack of appetite, weight loss, dehydration, lethargy, abdominal pain and shock.

    Diagnosis

    • To diagnose an illness potentially caused by salmonella, the cat will undergo a physical exam along with various tests, such as bacterial cultures, to determine if salmonella or another bacteria is present.

    Treatment

    • Unless the illness is severe, most cats receive supportive care such as IV fluids to rehydrate or restricted food and water until diarrhea and vomiting clear up. In severe cases, antibiotics may be used but many strains are antibiotic resistant.
