Lapland Longspur Bird Information

Lapland longspurs (Calcarius lapponicus ) are small songbirds of the bunting family, and derive their name from their elongated hind claw. Lapland longspurs flock together in large groups, some of which have been estimated to contain up to 4 million individual birds.

Geography

Lapland longspurs breed during the summer in the high Arctic and winter across vast areas Canada and the continental United States.

Habitat

Because they are ground foragers, lapland longspurs prefer open, grassy fields and pastures. During the breeding season they inhabit Arctic tundras.

Diet

Lapland longspurs actively forage for food on the ground, and normally eat insects, spiders, grain and seeds.

Identification

Lapland longspurs resemble medium-sized sparrows, and can be identified by their short, thick bills, their streaked sides and their white tail feathers. Breeding males will have black heads and chests, and a rufous patch on their napes.

Fun Fact

Because this species breeds in the Arctic summer where there is continual light, males will sing at any time of day, though they still prefer the early morning hours.
